More and more people use mobile gadgets to access online content, so the need for mobile-friendly websites is constantly growing. To fulfill this demand, the organization that administrates the universal domain name extensions, ICANN, introduced the .MOBI domain name extension in 2005. The first registrations were allowed in September 2006, and the concept behind this extension is that all websites that use it are required to comply with certain regulations. In other words, all dot MOBI websites need to be created to be accessed flawlessly by mobile devices in agreement with the so-called “MWI Best Practices for mobile content” created by the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) in collaboration with the dot MOBI Registry organization. These incorporate how a website is being navigated, the way it is being displayed (form and size), and so on.

The restrictions have raised some worries considering the fact that the generic top-level extension is the only one that specifies what devices has to be able to open a website and the way in which this should happen, breaking the so-called principles of device independence, according to which a site should be built in such a way as to be opened by the majority of browsers and devices, be they mobile or stationary.

As the .MOBI Registry organization does not register domains directly, you can order a .MOBI domain with any third-party provider, such as ours.
