Started in 2001, the .NAME top-level domain name extension is the only one supposed to be for personal websites only. These domain names can consist of personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other designations people are popular by. At first, just third-level registrations were possible, so if you planned to obtain john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and second-level registrations were also permitted. Already registered third-level names remained running.
